PLA To-Go Boxes FAQ's

What are PLA to-go boxes made from?

PLA (polylactic acid) is a biopolymer derived from renewable plant sources, such as corn starch or sugarcane.

Are PLA to-go boxes compostable?

Yes, all of Good Start Packaging’s PLA to-go boxes are certified commercially compostable by 3rd parties like BPI and CMA. This means they have proven to break down into organic matter under industrial composting conditions.

Can PLA to-go boxes safely hold hot or warm food?

PLA has a lower heat tolerance than some plastics. According to manufacturer guidelines, it is not ideal for very hot foods; typical PLA containers are rated for use below about 105–110°F. For warm or hot food needs, check out our paper and fiber containers.

How should I dispose of PLA to-go containers?

Because PLA requires industrial composting (high heat and moisture) to fully degrade, you should dispose of these containers in commercial composting facilities.

Are PLA to-go boxes recyclable?

PLA can technically be chemically recycled in certain specialized facilities, but this is not yet widely available. In most cases, composting is the more viable end-of-life route for PLA food containers. PLA should not be added to plastic recycling streams.

What makes PLA packaging a more sustainable alternative to traditional plastic containers?

PLA is plant-based, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and reducing carbon and energy needed to manufacture it. When composted, it breaks down into water and CO₂, leaving no toxic residue. Using PLA helps businesses meet growing regulatory and consumer demands for eco-friendly, compostable packaging.
