What are compostable coffee cups made of?
Our compostable coffee cups are crafted from plant-based materials such as bamboo paper or FSC Certified paper and lined with plant-based PLA (polylactic acid) derived from cornstarch, sugarcane, or beet pulp. These materials are designed and certified to be composted rather than landfilled.
How long do compostable cups take to decompose?
In industrial composting facilities, compostable cups typically break down within 60–90 days, meeting standards like EN 13432 or ASTM D6400. In home composting systems, decomposition can take 6–12 months or more, due to lower temperatures and less microbial activity.
Are compostable cups recyclable?
No, compostable cups generally cannot be recycled in standard recycling streams. The PLA bioplastic lining is difficult to separate and can contaminate paper recycling processes. Instead, these cups require industrial composting to be disposed of correctly.
Can you compost compostable cups at home?
Usually not. Most compostable cups are designed for industrial composting, not home bins. Unless a cup explicitly indicates “home compostable” certification (e.g., OK Compost HOME, TUV’s OK Compost Home), it likely won’t break down properly at home.
